Five Ways To Avoid Flight Delays
Saturday, Mar 02, 2002

Sometimes you can't avoid delays - like, because of bad weather, mechanical problems, or heavy air traffic - but Don has at least five ways to avoid them.

#1- Go non-stop, if possible. And when a non-stop isn't available, go with a "direct flight" (makes a stop, but you stay on the same plane). Changing planes increases the chances that one of them will have a delay, and it also increases the chances of missing the second plane. #2- Stay away from airports that have lots of delays, and weather can be a big factor. Logan Airport in Boston is notorious for weather delays. If you are headed for New England, Providence or Manchester are more likely to let you land, and take off. If you have to change planes in either Chicago or Dallas, choose Dallas. #3- Book a flight that leaves early in the day. The farther you get into the day, the more likely you will experience a delay. Plus, when you leave early, it gives you a better chance to get a later flight if your original flight is delayed or cancelled. #4- Make sure you have plenty of time for connections. In the past, the airlines have insisted on an hour between landing and your next take off for domestic travel (two hours for international), but with increased time needed for security, you should add at least another hour-and-a-half between flights. #5- Stay away from flights that consistently have delays. Every flight has its own performance record. You can check out the on-time performance of any flight on the website of the airline you are considering.
