Breaking The Fare
Sunday, Apr 14, 2002
A great tool for saving big bucks when you fly is to buy two different fares instead of one! |
When the round trip air fare to the place you want to go is way high, one of my key strategies is what is called "breaking the fare." For example, United Airlines recently had a sale on tickets to Hawaii - you could fly round trip from Salt Lake to Honolulu for $460. After a couple of weeks, they raised the fare to $977 - more than double!! But if you check a few of the airports between here and there, you find that you can fly to Oakland, San Jose or Burbank for between $156 and $168, depending on what airline you fly. The fare from Oakland or San Jose to Honolulu for flights through the end of May is $312.80 on either Aloha (non-stop) or American (via Los Angeles). And starting June 1st, Aloha will take you non-stop from Burbank to Honolulu with an introductory fare of $190. Unfortunately, the introduction will only last for the month of June.
Let's see, $977 or $468 from now through the end of May, $346 for June.
Just bear in mind that if you use Southwest between here and the West Coast, you'll have to recheck your bag (Southwest doesn't transfer luggage). |
