How to Survive A Road Trip With the Kids...
Sunday, Jul 14, 2002
We talk a lot about getting low air fares and great cruise deals, but over two-thirds of Americans will go to their vacation destination by car. Don has ideas for helping you drive there with the kids AND still having your sanity intact. |
#1- Safety first - no matter how much they may protest, make sure the kids are buckled up.
#2- Bring the pets. The kids tend to focus on their furry friends rather than on how much longer the trip is going to take.
#3- Bring boredom busters. Take along a new, wrapped toy, book or game.
#4- Bring electronic boredom busters. Kids, and adults, will be kept busy with the handheld electronic versions of some of the classics. I can go several hours with Tetrus.
#5- Bring travel diaries. Kids will enjoy keeping track of sights they see, and reading them later. They will often be able to use their notes for a classroom assignment in school.
#6- Be sure to exercise. Some people have their kids run around the minivan several times every time they stop.
#7- Offer bribes! Promise the kids time at the hotel pool, some playground time in the next stop's city park, a chance to choose the next restaurant, or motel, or the chance to buy a souvenir at the next stop.
