TIPS FOR TRAVEL TO GREECE (& OTHER PLACES) FROM MARIA SHILAOS!
Sunday, Aug 25, 2002
KSL's very own Maria Shilaos took a trip of a lifetime to Greece with seven other family members, and she learned some things about international travel that she thinks everyone going abroad should know. |
#1- Get an international phone card. They are reasonably priced, and easy to get in lots of stores (like Fred Meyer). Maria says it's hard to call home without one.
#2- Take along a bar of soap and some wet wipes. She stayed at a couple of hotels where they didn't provide soap, and wet wipes are handy throughout the day (quite often there was no place while touring to wash hands).
#3- Get some local currency (the Euro in Greece), particularly for use in more rural areas where ATMs are not plentiful and stores won't take plastic or foreign currency.
#4- Pack light! Big luggage just isn't handy.
#5- Beware of cab drivers. In many areas they are not regulated in any way, and quite often you'll get taken to the cleaners. In the big cities Maria thinks the way to go is with public transportation - it goes everywhere and it's quite inexpensive.
Other tips from some other international travelers:
A- Take along a roll of toilet paper. Many public rest rooms don't have any, so have a back pack and put a roll in.
B- Your credit card will get you the best exchange rate (from any ATM).
C- Make sure you take any medications you might need, including things that are "over the counter" in the United States. |
