What's Wrong with the Government's Airport Security Plans
Sunday, Sep 29, 2002

I'm no expert in airline security, but I think the federal plans are way off target, and they are going to cost us a ton of money!

We need to think things through before we spring into action. Since 9-11, it seems that our government's approach to airline security has been: "let's do something - anything!" The first thing they did, you may remember, was to create "buffer zones" in front of airport terminals. The idea, I think, was to keep car bombs from blowing up the terminal building. At LAX they are actually talking about keeping cars out of the complex of terminals altogether. They would build a transfer center offsite, where people would park their cars, get on shuttle buses, and then ride to the terminals. Buffer zones totally miss the point. Isn't the purpose of airport security to keep people who want to hijack or blow up airplanes off the planes, rather than protecting airport terminals? Plus, history does not support the idea that terrorists would rather blow up airport buildings than other buildings in town. Right now, the security focus is on baggage. They want to keep possibly dangerous luggage off the plane. Shouldn't we be focusing on keeing possibly dangerous people off the plane? As I recall, the only "luggage" any of the 9-11 hijackers had were canvas bags.
