Direct Flight and First Class Misconceptions
Monday, Jun 18, 2001

Some help deciphering some of that airline "lingo"

The travel industry has its own language, which consists of words in English, but each one has a very specific meaning. Two great examples are the term "direct flight" when you're talking about the airlines, and the term "first class" when the discussion is about hotel rooms. Let's say I'm flying from Salt Lake to Boston and I askl my travel agent or the airline agent, "Is this a direct flight?". He or she says, "Yes.", and I think I'm flying without stopping. No. There are three kinds of airline travel: a "connecting flight" means that I'm flying on one airplane to a place where I will change planes, and maybe airlines, indorder to get to my ultimate destination; a "direct flight" means I'm staying on the same plane, but it's going to stop one or more times before i get to my destination; and a "non-stop" flight means, well, it means NON-STOP. And when it comes to hotels, first class isn't at the top of the most commonly used hotel rating system. It's right in the middle. The only consistent, worldwide hotel rating system is the one used in the Official Hotel Guide (OHG). It uses nine major categories, which , from top to bottom, go like this: Superior Deluxe, Deluxe, Moderate Deluxe, Superior First Class, First Class, Moderate First class, Superior Tourist, Tourist and Moderate Tourist. Plus a tenth- Limited-Service First Class category, which are hotels with good guest rooms, but little in the way of public space. At the top, Superior Deluxe is reserved for a few of the world's top spots, while Moderate Tourist borders on, "you really wouldn't want to stay there." The big-name downtown business hotels generally fall into the Moderate Deluxe or Superior First Class catefories.
